Computing Professional Development (FLEX) Obligations: Full-Time Faculty, Part-Time Faculty

Options Available for Professional Development Days:
Types of Activities / Workshops / Committee Work that count and those that don't count

Computing Obligation - Full-Time Faculty:  Your Fall 2004 and Spring 2005 contract assignment, including hourly rate determine the amount of hours you are obligation for the 2004-2005 years.   All Full-time faculty members must document their 33.5 hours of Professional Development obligation-‘in lieu-of-instruction’ hours.

In addition to the 33.5 hours, if a full-time instructor has an hourly rate assignment for the Fall 2004 and/or Spring 2005, their obligation will be equal to one half the standard hour value of the assignment.

Example #1:  Full-time instructor Eva Jones, in addition to her regular class load, will teach 5 hourly units for the Fall 2004 semester and 3 hourly units for the Spring 2005 semester.
5 hours  + 3 hours = 8 hours/2 = 4 + 33.5 = 37.5 hours of Professional Development obligation

Computing Obligation - Part-Time Faculty:  Your Fall 2004 and Spring 2005 Semesters obligation will be equal to one half the standard hour value of the assignment.

Example #2:  Adjunct instructor Maria Garcia will teach 3 units for the Fall 2004 semester and 6 units for the Spring 2005 semester.
3 hours + 6 hours = 9 hours/2 = 4.5 hours of Professional Development obligation

Example #3:  Adjunct instructor Tom Smith will teach 6 units for the Spring 2005 semester.
6 hours = 6 hours/2 = 3 hours of Professional Development obligation

Note:  Special Assignments, PACE, online, TBA-Professional responsibility is determined by the standard hours value of the course, and does not depend on the days of the week the class meets.  All adjunct and full-time faculty have Professional Development obligations.

It is not necessary to submit more hours than obligated as it creates a great deal of excessive paperwork. Please maintain a personal file of additional hours and documents in the event that a state audit occurs and substantiating materials are requested.  There are over 700 full-time and part-time contracted faculty members; therefore, your assistance in completing the necessary documentation is critical in expediting the process.

If you have any question, please call Alicia Rodriquez-Estrada at (213) 763-3971 or visit her office in LRC 265 in the northeast wing of the Library (Office hours TBA).  You can also contact her by email at rodriqai@lattc.edu.

REMEMBER, COMPLETED FORMS ARE DUE JUNE 10, 2005.  INCOMPLETE FORMS WILL BE RETURNED.

Options Available for Professional Development Days

What are Professional Development days?
Professional Development is ones attendance of meetings, workshops, conferences, individual projects, etc., in lieu of days of instruction.  The purpose of Professional Development days is to provide instructors the opportunity to participate in development activities that are related to “staff, student and instructional improvement.”  According to Title 5 regulations, Professional Development credit may be given for activities that improve instruction, improve curriculum, perform institutional research, improve student services, or improve the capabilities of faculty to provide instruction or student services.

Professional Development activities cannot include tasks that are an ongoing part of your regular teaching responsibilities such as grading papers, choosing texts/videos, reading in your discipline, writing lesson plans or syllabus guides, etc..

Activities counting toward the four (4) “floating” Professional Development days (33.5 hours) credit may be completed at other than an instructors regular teaching assignment, legal holidays, or LACCD designated holidays, i.e., the Friday following Thanksgiving.  Paid vacation days/weeks (ex. Spring/Winter vacation dates) may be applied to Professional Development activities only to the extent that the hours would not conflict with your regular assigned teaching load, if you were not on vacation.  Non-compliance of a completed Professional Development obligation is a violation of the Collective Bargaining Agreement and will result in loss of pay as mandated by the Educational Code.
