Course Description:

Learning Skills 36 covers the reading and study skills needed for college success.  It is divided into three one-unit modules, which use the same textbook and can be taken in the same semester or in different semesters.

·        Learning Skills 36A, Reading Fundamentals, covers basic vocabulary skills and paragraph comprehension. 

·        Learning Skills 36B, Reading Improvement, utilizes the same skills on longer readings from a variety of subjects.  It introduces a six-step method for reading and study. 

·        Learning Skills 36C, Study Reading, adapts the six-step method for textbook reading, using selections from a variety of college textbooks.

Prerequisite:

Before registering for this class, you need to take the Accuplacer placement exam.  You may be placed in this class by making an acceptable reading score on the test. If you have not taken it, go to R-100 and make an appointment.  Ask for your scores and bring them to your instructor who will evaluate them and recommend the appropriate class(es) for you.

 

Getting Started:

Follow these directions carefully.  You should print this page.

 

 

·        Please complete the Welcome Form for LS 36 ABC after officially enrolling in the course.  This will send your instructor an e-mail alerting her that you are new to the class. In the comments section, include the classes you are taking and their section numbers.  If you are taking more than one LS 36 class, it is not necessary to fill out more than one Form.

·        In approximately 48 hours or less, you may then log into your class, which is accessible through an online doorway called, “Etudes.”  To get to your class, you can go to (and bookmark) http://lattc.etudes.fhda.edu and follow the appropriate links; or click on one of the links below.

·        Your User ID is your last name and your first name (all lowercase, no spaces, and no punctuation) and your Password is the last 4 digits of your social security number.  For example:

§         Student’s Name & SS#:  Jane Doe, 123-45-6789

§         User ID:  doejane Password:  6789

·        When you get into Etudes, first go to “Forums” in the menu on the left side.  Click on the link, “Please Register” located in the upper right hand corner.  You can leave “ICQ” and “AOL-IM” fields blank.  After you have finished, click “Submit Registration.”

·        Go to “Classroom” to view your syllabus and then go to “Assignments,” to begin your work.
