Associate in Science Degree Program Information |
The Associate of Science Degree Program and is designed for full time day students and is taught in four semester blocks of instruction. Each block consists of four or five classes each semester and should be taken as one unit. Students enrolled in all four of the block of classes have priority over students taking just one or two classes.
The program is nonpareil in the areas of Motor Control and Programmable
Logic Controllers. This degree demonstrates that the student is prepared
for a career in the Electrical Construction or Maintenance field and also
is prepared to transfer to a Four-year college. Many of the department's
industrial partners give preference to graduates of this program. Our industrial
partners include Budweiser, USC, UCLA, Domtar Gypsum and many others. The
department is constantly attempting to forge new partnerships with industry
in the area.
The Associate of Science Degree requires the 48 units of required courses
plus 18 units of (Plan B) General Education courses. These
requirements may be found in the front portion of the College Catalog
or the last few pages of the schedule of classes or by contacting the Counseling
Office.
The Electrical Construction and Maintenance Certificate of Completion is awarded for the successful completion of the 48 units minimum without the (Plan B) General Education courses.
General Education Requirements for an Associate of Science are eighteen
units and must have three units of Natural Science, three units of Humanities,
six units of Language and Rationality and three units of Health and Physical
education. Suggestions concerning these are below.
The Electrical Construction and Maintenance program begins with a review of basic math as it relates to the Electrical Trade and an introduction to hand tools, materials, basic resistive theory, wire sizing, circuit construction and troubleshooting. Students who are returning after a long absence from school or have not recently taken a math course are advised to take both the online and face-to-face tutoring offered through the learning skills laboratory. It is suggested that students with weak Mathematics or English skills take remedial classes concurrently or before beginning the program. A new learning communities English 22 Technical English class is offered at a time directly after the first semester classes and in the same building. English 28 is required for the A.S. but English 101 is required for transfer to a four-year college.
Classes in black are offered day and night unless otherwise noted, classes
in red are offered at night and as a Saturday class.
The First Semester Block of instruction minimally includes the following classes.
Ecomnt 115 Fundamentals of D.C. Electricity 3 units
Ecomnt 116 Hand tools and Wiring Practices 2 units
Ecomnt 117 Elementary Circuit Practices 4 units
Ecomnt 119 Applied Electrical Calculations and Measurements 3 units OR
Ecomnt 173 Electrical Mathematics 1 (night class) 3 units
It is suggested students take the learning communities English or another
English course, a Learning Skills class such as LS 35, LS 35A or 35B and
a physical education class concurrently.
The Second Semester continues with basic through advanced motor control, motor theory, blueprint reading, estimating and electrical codes. The second semester block of instruction includes the following classes.
Ecomnt 120 Industrial Control Systems 3 units
Ecomnt 128 Industrial Control Systems Practices 3 units
Ecomnt 129 Fundamentals of A.C. 3 units
Ecomnt 169 Alternating Current Practices 2 units

Suggestions in reference to the General Education Requirements.
Natural Science, 3 units required. Physics 3 is the Physics of Electricity and Magnetism. Students who have taken Ecomnt 115 Fundamentals of D.C. and Ecomnt 129 should have no trouble at all passing this class. Students who received an “A” in both classes might even consider challenging the class.
Social & Behavioral Sciences, 3 units required although, six may be required. Students may elect to take a American Institutions and U.S. History competency exam from the social Sciences Department (room F-248) or take History 13, The United States in the Twentieth Century. Politics effects the income of the workingman. You should be aware of how they effect your income. Labor Studies classes are also Social Science Classes. Why not find out about the laws that effect your employment and get credit for social sciences at the same time!
Humanities, 3 units required. The choices here are wide. Anything from Art, dance, theater and so on. If you happen to speak Spanish, Japanese, Chinese or some other language, a class in that language counts as your humanities requirement.
Language and Rationality, 6 units required. English 28 to graduate but English 101 for transfer credit and Math 113 through 146. Students who have taken Econmnt 119 should have no problem with Math 230 Mathematics for Liberal Arts Students and is UC and CSU transferable.
Health and Physical Education, 3 units required. Health 12 is UC and CSU transferable and is the class for all electricians. Safety Education, First Aid and CPR. Your life may depend on your fellow worker knowing CPR or a fellow worker’s life may someday depend on your CPR skills.
You will still need one P.E. class. Anyone at all. Have fun.
