Steps to Become an LGI:
1. Complete skills competency and gather knowledge in the area you want
to teach.
2. Complete the ICT course (Instructor Candidate Training) – built
into our LGI class
3. Complete the specialty class (LGI in your case)
4. Send the 5736 to your home chapter and request authorization to
teach.
5. The chapter gives you permission to teach there and establishes
them as your HOME chapter.
If you want to teach outside your HOME chapter you:
1. Send a letter to the chapter in which you want to teach a class
and request extended authorization.
2. State the reason why, the course you want to teach and the time
period for teaching there.
3. Attach a copy of your original 5736 if you have it or send a copy
of your re-authorization card.
In order to retain your instructor status you need to do the following:
1. Teach a class within the period you are authorized. This is
18 months – 2 years depending upon when you complete your original instructor
course.
2. Submit a course record for that class within 30 days to your HOME
chapter.
3. Complete any update training required by the home chapter to retain
current instructor status.
Safety Training for Swim Coaches
Red Cross Program taught at the request of United States Swimming to teach swim coaches to be more safety conscious and prepared for emergencies. The training is required to maintain their insurance standing. No coach can be on the pool deck during a USS swim meet unless they are currently certified. Plus the day they are expired their insurance becomes null and void.
In order to teach this class you must be WSI or LGI AND have competitive swimming experience as a swimmer or a coach AND have special permission by the local Red Cross Chapter.
